There is no walking; your only movement ability is to fling yourself to another surface by aiming with joysticks (Do not play this game without a controller) Things get complicated when it comes to the combat. Your shot has a charge time, and priming it can leave you open to attack. The speedy jumps combined with the slow attack give combat a unique pace where you have to find the right spot to charge your attack, then often leap immediately after to avoid projectiles. Knowing when to strike and when to dodge is the key to not getting slaughtered, and there's enough enemy variety to keep you on your toes. There are a couple of areas later on which are perhaps a bit naughty in terms of spamming the more annoying enemies to up the difficulty, but overall the combat remains engaging and gets satisfyingly challenging. Those who like their combat precise may find Dandara rather chaotic, but I love the manic jumping; trying to be sly with your jumps to get one over on your enemies. Boss fights are also a highlight, and use the mechanics in smart ways. The visuals are great and often quirky, the artist's village in particular has a really unique style. The boss theme is the best part of the music, which is otherwise decent. Story is very minimalistic; but personally I found the visual design and the small hints at the plot to be enough to keep me engaged, and kept the game focused. This is not a very long game; despite the occasional difficult part I breezed through it in 8 hours. I would really recommend giving something this unique a try if you like metroidvanias and want something challenging and different. The game isn't perfect; it probably could have been longer or more forthcoming with the story, and I do feel like there was probably more potential for puzzles and platforming. Overall this game does feel quite special, and despite being less polished in certain departments than other metroidvanias, it has something unique and fun to offer.. I donno who thought that platformers had too much movement, but this game is NOT for me. I really couldn't stand the main aspect of this game, which is standing still and jumping from location to location. It looks neat, but it's extremely frustrating to move around like this, especially with how sticky it is, and how I can only stand on snow for some reason. If this mechanic allowed you to snap into places anywhere, I could see giving up standard movement for it, but as it is, it's just limiting, and a mechanic in place to force puzzles. If that's your bag, this game is for you, but it's definitely not for me.
